Preparing for Your Joint Replacement

UF Health Flagler Hospital provides every hip and knee replacement patient with a preparation guide designed to complement — not replace — what you’ll discuss with Dr. Grimsley directly. It walks you through what to expect before, during, and after surgery, so you and your caregivers know exactly what’s needed for a smooth recovery. Patients who go into surgery informed and prepared tend to recover faster and more fully — good preparation isn’t a formality, it’s part of the treatment.

Preoperative education class

Before your surgery, UF Health St. Johns offers a free class covering what to expect during your hospital stay, how to prepare beforehand, and how to recognize and avoid complications during recovery — plus time for your questions. It’s led by members of the hospital’s orthopaedic team and runs Mondays and Wednesdays, 10–11 a.m.

We recommend attending 3–4 weeks before your surgery date, and bringing a family member or friend along — patients who actively participate in a class like this tend to have the smoothest recoveries.

Space is limited, so registration is required — walk-ins can’t be accommodated. Call 904.819.4551 to reserve your spot (if there’s no answer, leave a message, or email sarah.adams2@ufhealth.org).

Getting there: Park in Lot A. The class is held on the 8th floor of UF Health Flagler Hospital — take the main lobby elevator up, and the classroom is just ahead to the left.
