Why Should I Choose Dr. Grimsley?

Dr. Richard Grimsley grew up in Jacksonville. He is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Miami Medical School. He has extensive expertise in the fields of orthopaedic treatment and surgery, having received his training at some of the country’s busiest joint hospitals, including New York’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, Bellevue Medical Center and New York University Hospital. He also undertook an additional year of specialized fellowship instruction with Dr. Anthony Hedley, a highly respected innovator in the field of adult joint reconstruction.

A Diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Grimsley is one of only a handful of Board-certified physicians in Northeast Florida to have fellowship training in joint replacement. He specializes in adult joint reconstruction of the hip and knee.

Dr. Grimsley has been in practice in our area since 1995, first in Orange Park, then at Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, Riverside Division, and now as a founding partner of OrthoEdge. He performs surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, which is the only first accredited Center of Excellence for Joint Replacement in Northeast Florida.

An Elective Approach to Surgery

Every patient is unique and each patient’s treatment plan must be tailored to his or her specific goals for an active life. Dr. Grimsley’s goal is to identify, and then treat with compassion, wisdom and expertise, your specific musculoskeletal needs.

Only you can decide whether your pain and disability warrants joint replacement. Surgery should always be the last option. To that end, Dr. Grimsley is committed to helping each patient make an informed decision. In an environment where patient expectations too often are influenced by the promotion of high tech/high-priced implant systems that are unproven clinically, or by new surgical techniques that have been commercialized before their true efficacy has been fully established, he feels it is essential for all patients to have access to unbiased educational materials. Dr. Grimsley will take the time to fully explain your diagnosis, treatment options, and potential outcomes. His goal is to help you make a well-informed choice about which type of surgery to have, or whether to continue with more conservative methods of pain management.

Uncommon Joint Care

Dr. Richard Grimsley is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, and one of only a handful of physicians in this region with advanced fellowship training in total joint replacement and reconstruction. He specializes in the treatment of joint pain resulting from:

  • Joint degeneration
  • Metabolic bone disease
  • Trauma and sports-related injures
  • Fracture non-union
  • Failed hip and knee prostheses

In all cases, Dr. Grimsley’s goal is to restore maximum movement and function as quickly as possible with the least risk.  He is committed to providing compassionate, conservative care, and in the majority of cases, will utilize non-surgical treatments such as lifestyle changes, weight loss, oral medications, injections and physical therapy, before he considers or recommends surgery.

Expertise in Complex Revision Surgery

Just as human joints can wear out over time, so too can even the most advanced joint implants.  Wear and loosening of implant components is affected not only by how long the artificial joint has been in use, but also by how the patient uses the joint. Younger, heavier, and/or more active individuals are at greater risk for increased wear and implant failure requiring revision surgery.

Revision surgery is more complicated that the original joint replacement; such cases should only be performed by surgeons like Dr. Grimsley who have advanced specialty training in this procedure.
